THE IMPORTANCE AND FUNCTION OF PROTEINS IN TRAINING

WHAT ARE PROTEINS?

Proteins are important nutrients, just like carbohydrates and fats that we need and that the body cannot do without. They are the building blocks of our body.

Proteins are found throughout the body. Over 40% of proteins are in the muscles and over 25% of them in our organs. The rest is in the blood and skin.

Proteins consist of 20 different amino acids, each amino acid having its own function within the body.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF PROTEINS WITHIN OUR BODY?

Proteins are used to tense our muscles and organs and are used to provide strength in our joints, tendons, bones and other connective tissues.
They also help digest our food and create energy.

Proteins also provide:

  • sending signals through our brain,
  • in the production of hormones
  • boosting the immune system
  • help with fat burning
  • in the recovery of wounds and muscles

ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS

The body does not produce enough of these amino acids or not at all. This makes it extra important to get enough through food and supplements.
An overview of amino acids:

  • Leucine;
  • Isoleucine;
  • Valine;
  • Lysine;
  • Tryptophan;
  • Threonine;
  • Methionine;
  • Phenylalanine;
  • Hidstidine;

Amino acids are mainly obtained from animal products such as dairy, eggs, protein shakes etc. and also from vegetables, nuts and seeds. If you eat a varied diet, you can get enough from your diet. If you eat vegan or vegetarian, you can eat products such as eggs, soy (tofu), protein shakes, BCAAs, chickpeas, lima beans, lentils, nuts and quinoa.

HOW MUCH PROTEIN SHOULD YOU EAT DAILY?

It is best to consume 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, with a protein limit of 0.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per meal as a minimum in order to recover well from your training and to get enough protein per meal.

If you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, you should consume a total of 2.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, with 0.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight as a minimum per meal.

Consuming more protein than necessary will work against you rather than against you. The diet also needs to have room for carbohydrates and fats for recovery, athletic performance and overall health.
By consuming too much protein we can literally suppress our own testosterone production. This surplus in protein intake is still used for energy production or results in the build-up of fat mass.

ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT AMINO ACID FOR BUILDING MUSCLE MASS

Leucine is the most important amino acid that we as strength athletes need to consume, because this has a direct effect on protein synthesis (building muscle mass). This is because the hormone mTOR is activated with sufficient amino acids in the muscle cells, whereby Leucine in particular stimulates this hormone the most. mTOR is responsible for the activation of protein synthesis, which allows our body to recover from workouts and build muscle mass. That is why it is best to take the majority of your protein intake after training spread over meals. After training it is important to take a Whey Isolate shake to stimulate mTOR for recovery. Take this with water, and not with milk because lactose slows down protein absorption.

For additional stimulation of mTOR you can also  use Phosphatidic acid  .

RESUME

Proteins have many important roles in our body to be able to live. That is why it is important to consume enough proteins throughout the day. More is certainly not better.

  • Use 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight for a normal diet
  • Use 2.4 grams per kilogram of body weight for a vegan or vegetarian diet

We get proteins mainly from animal products, but also from vegetables, nuts and grains. Leucine is the amino acid that is most important for strength athletes because it ensures that muscle mass can be built.
